Mango Popsicle - Summer Coolers - BM#5

What are summer coolers without the flavor of the season , mango .. I love them so much, but keep them at a distance owing to the calories they have . Mango has a special place in my tastes .. have a pieces of that sweet fruit with vanilla icecream.. My athai loves that combination.
Mangoes and mom are inseperable she defenitely needs to have it with curd rice during this season.
I had a different plan this time. So made popsicles out of fresh mango pulp. It was sooper .. you must give it a try for the freshness of the popsicle made from fresh mango rather than essence or artificial flavoring. Simple yet delicious. I have two more popsicles to be posted but Im reserving them to be posted after the marathon. I want to post the ones that came after I did a lot of thinking, after choosing Summer Coolers as my theme. But do watch this space for more popsicle ideas.

Mango Pickle - Step by Step procedure- BM#4

I had been to my native during the month of March. The most awaited visit to my Janaki Paati's house. The person to whom this little space of mine gets its name. I literally made everything for lunch on that day. I made Raw Banana Puttu, Potato Fry, Mango Pickle & Carrot Halwa ( My uncle specifically wanted me to make it for him ). Drumstick Sambhar was made by my aunt. Paati is diabetic and is not supposed to have potato, raw banana and sweets. But she did not leave anything untouched. I was so happy that I was able to cook for her atleast once in a while. Today's recipe is about how to make Mango Pickle. Being the season of Mangoes I thought it was apt to post this recipe. Ingerdients:

  • Raw Mango - 1 Cut into small pieces

  • Red Chillie powder - 3 spoons

  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 spoon

  • Salt - to taste

  • Tempering - oil & Mustard seeds

Method of Preparation:

  • Cut the mango into small pieces

  • In a kadai add oil . When the oil is hot add the mustard seed and allow it to spatter

  • Once the mustard seeds are done add the mango pieces and saute for 2 mins

  • Add Red chillie powder and mix well . Go on to add salt and saute for 2 mins

  • Yummy Mango Pickle is ready

  • Serve with hot bisibela bath or creamy curd rice. The combination of color and taste will be too good.

  • This mango pickle can be shelved for 2 days

Day 1 - Blogging Marathon - Mangai Sadham

Hello Blogging World ...
I have started running in the marathon, so that I post regularly. There are lot of food photos that are in my archive.
Being a part of this marathon will motivate me to post often unlike before.

I kick start this marathon with a yummy and tangy Mangai Sadham. In Chennai, we experience summer almost throughout the year. During peak summer time, mangoes are seen in abundant. That is the time when summer hols would have started and every household will be making pickles of all kinds and along with vadams. This is to get maximum benefit of the heat that will be scorching us. Mangoes always bring back sweet memories of school and college. Th0se are days when we used to get 4 pieces of mango with a little chilli and salt powder sprinkled on it for Re.1. Now we need to give Rs 10 for the same stuff in Ranganathan street.

Coming to the recipe of the day. Yes Mangai Sadham. The moment I think about it, I can feel the tanginess of the rice.

Here is what you will need to make this yummy dish

  • 1 cup of rice - washed and steamed
  • 1 Green Mango - scrapped
  • 2 tsp of Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp of Coriander Powder
  • Salt to taste.
  • Oil, mustard, fenugreek seeds for tempering
  • Cilantro for garnish

How do you make this Mangai Sadham. Here you go -

  1. Boil the rice seperately and let it cool
  2. In a heavy bottom wok , heat oil and add the tempering ingrediants
  3. Add the scrapped mango to it and saute for 3 mins
  4. Add the redchilli and coriander powder along with salt to the sauted green mango
  5. Adjust salt as per taste. Remember that you need to add salt for the rice that you will be mixing with this.
  6. When the raw smell of redchilli and coriander powder vanishes, take the wok off the stove and let it cool for a minute
  7. To this add the cooled rice and mix well.
  8. Check for salt and add accordingly
  9. Garnish with cilantro and serve with raitha and potato chips.

I am actually waiting for peak summer when this dish will be more frequent than now.I get lovely aroma from my fellow runner's kitchen. Shall we peek in.. come on let us
